The Cyberathlete Professional League has confirmed that it will hold a gaming event in China later this year.
The CPL announced in August 2008 it had been bought by an investment group based in the United Arab Emirates.
It has now been confirmed that the CPL has opened its first Asian office, in the Chinese city of Chengdu, in a partnership with China’s Overseas Chinese Town Chengdu Holdings (OCT) and Singapore’s International Digital Media (IDM) Pte Ltd. "We are excited to be in partnership with China’s OCT Chengdu and Singapore’s IDM on developing the esports industry in the growing market of Asia," said Scott Valencia, CPL Holdings Group CEO.
"The CPL has long been Asia’s esports brand of choice, and by having the first gaming community event in the City of Chengdu we get an opportunity to express our gratitude for their years of support.”
Meanwhile, the CPL has revelead that it plans to develop new China-based esports properties and launch events for the Chinese gaming community, the first of which will be called "CPL China" and will strive to "bring the CPL back to basics."
Although details on this event are still slim, the CPL says it will be held in September 2009 and be a "LAN party for fun and to determine the best gamer in the game titles chosen by the community."
More details about the tournament will soon be released.
